Carrie Laws, Director at The Family Law Company, has been elected as President of the Plymouth Law Society (PLS) for 2024 alongside childcare lawyer Jennifer Phillips of Plymouth City Council as Vice President.

It is only the second time in the society’s 209 year history that it has had an all female top team following Rebecca Wood as President and Carrie as Vice President last year.

The PLS membership collaborates to encourage local people into all areas of the profession, support charitable initiatives, share best practice, promote continuous professional development and feed into The Law Society at a national level.

Upon assuming the role, Carrie commented: “I’m honored to be elected as President and want to encourage everyone who works in the Plymouth legal community to get involved in our events and initiatives this year.  In particular, I’m looking forward to championing inclusivity, legal aid, mental health, and women in the law throughout 2024.”

She continued: “I’d like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to Rebecca Wood on her tireless work in raising awareness of many of the issues that I will be continuing to push. She had a great year in attracting the President of the Law Society, Lubna Shuja, to the city and hosting an amazing annual dinner at The Box whilst raising £3000 for local charities.”

Outgoing president Rebecca Wood said: “Congratulations to Carrie on becoming the 10th female President of PLS. She is a lawyer who cares deeply about ensuring everyone has access to the law, from clients through to the next generation of lawyers, whatever their backgrounds. I wish her well and look forward to supporting her along with our newly elected committee.”
